Cottage Style Gardening presented by Peter Gallo, Tuesday, March 25th, 4-5 pm at the Morrisville Library
Hyde Park Village resident Peter Gallo will share his thoughts and experiences as a local gardener. A resident of the village since 1984, over the decades he has created an intense and varied dooryard cottage-style Main Street garden comprised
mostly of hearty native and introduced perennials, unusual cultivars, and antique varieties, as well as “weeds”. Gallo practices a deceptively informal, casual gardening style, favorable to songbirds, pollinators, and other local life; plants are allowed to grow in a more natural and unstructured way, but the rustic character is carefully cultivated. Gallo will share colorful documentation of efforts over the years, and, more recently, the creation of Elsa French Park, devoted to the cultivation of hearty Zone 4 varieties, including samples from some of the village’s noted legacy gardens, as well as native wild varieties from local roadsides and fencerows.
Peter is a lecturer in humanities and the fine arts at St. Michaels College, Colchester, and leads seminars in culture and media at Champlain College. He received his PhD in Art History at Concordia University in Montreal. He is an artist and writer, whose work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe.
