Hungarian history goes back to more than a 1000 years in the heart of Europe, however even before Hungarians got here, the land was already occupied by the Roman Empire. Hungarian history is full of occupations, sieges and battles, it has been a constant struggle for freedom and independence.

The golden age of Hungary and Budapest was in the 19th century, when Hungary formed part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy under Habsburg rule.

Most of the architectural wonders of the Pest side date back to this time period. Marvel at the gigantic Hungarian Parliament building, see the Hungarian crown jewels on display. Pop into St Stephen Basilica, where the holy right hand of the first king of Hungary is kept.
